When I ride my bike, I get what would be described as a farmer's tan only worse. should I embrace this as my price for riding my bike or should I figure out a way to even out my tan?

I would wear them as badge of honor for all the miles you put in, but if that doesn't work there's always either the tanning beds or Sun screen with SPF 70+, because you want to be ready if the sun shines bright for 70 hours straight.

A tan is when melanocytes react to UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Melanocytes are located at the base of the epidermis between the epidermis and the dermis below. Melanocytes use the amino acid tyrosine to produce melanin. This melanin leaves the melanocytes and travels up through the epidermis where it reacts with the UVA and UVB radiation through a chemical reaction darkening the pigmentation of the skin. By the way, did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body?
