dear lurch,
My girlfriend keeps telling my fingernails are too long. it seems like i am clipping them constantly. I mean twice a week constantly. This seems excessive to me. Are my fingernails growing at some freakish rate?

The growth rate of finger nails is dependent on: age, health and nutrition, exercise levels, season, and even the length of ones finger. The average person's fingernail grows fastest in their 20's and 30's then tappers off slightly, and their fingernails tend to grow faster in the summer season, one would think it would have to do with higher activity levels and warmer temperatures. Fingernails grow faster than toenails. People with longer fingers tend to have fingernails that grow faster. If you think that your fingernail are growing freakishly fast try an experiment. Make a permanent mark on your nail at the base of the lunule ( the cresent shaped area at the proximal end of the nail) next to the cuticle, and see how long it takes to get to grow out to the end of your finger. It should take 4-6 months about 1cm/100 days or about 1.5 inches/year. If it grows faster than that you may just be a freak or possible Sabertooth.
