Hey Lurch, I battle knee pain most of the time. However my right knee has given me less trouble over the years. Three weeks ago I rode an easy 25 mile ride and when I got off of the bike I could barely walk on that knee for three or four days. I've ridden similar rides three times since and it's getting worse. My last ride was five days ago and I'm still having great pain, even while I'm sitting or trying to sleep. I've raised the seat to the point it's hard for me to get back in the saddle after standing up on the pedals. The pain seems to start from the outside and go to the center of the knee. I also feel discomfort when I'm just bending it. Is my only alternative is to see a Doc?

I would start with a Dr.. But from the sounds of it (and this is just a best guess from years of running) It sounds like a tight Iliotibial band, because this is the type of problem that effect the outside of the knee. Do you have more trouble walking down steps than up steps ( this is a kind of litmus test for a tight Iliotibial band) Is the pain long term and is there swelling involved? You might also look at your workout regiment. Are you going too hard too fast and are you doing some amount of light stretching? But, with as much pain as it seems to be giving you it sounds like a Doctor would be the first place to start and see if he would refer you to a physical therapist. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

I'm not lurch but I would venture down to bikes and moore and have Tim do a fit of you on your bike. Front knee pain can also suggest a seatpost that is too low.
I have had IT band issues as well. I would get a cadence meter and see how fast you are pedaling. If you have low cadence, you are a masher and it will cause your IT bands to flair up.
If I don't have a cadence meter, I get lazy and the next thing I know...IT band problems and knee issues.

Thanks, I decided today to go to the Dr after not being able to straighten my knee when I tried to stand up from the desk. I will also go to Bikes and Moore for the fit.
