i noticed that i have a cut in my rear tire that runs through the surface where the tire has no tread. it is about an inch long. and just deep enough to place the very tip of yuor fingernail in. could this have been caused by hitting something or something getting caught under the wheel while braking? is it ok to ride on? its on the rear wheel. is there anything i can do, such as sealing it?

Many things could have caused it. It is something that could hold for along time or blow the next time you ride. My advice is to replace it as this is the safest thing to do. If you do continue to ride it try putting a little super glue in the cut and boot it from inside with something fairly solid but pliable. A dollar bill will work for this. I have done this and ridden many additional miles on a tire. If you choose not to replace it be aware that it could blow. Be careful.

or in the case of Audis, a $100 bill will also work!

I have a similar problem: I went for a ride two days ago and ran over the bottom of a broken glass bottle. I tried to miss it, but no luck. The tire didn't go flat nor did it lose any pressure, that I could notice. Today I rolled my bike out and found it had a flat tire. I checked the tire it self and found two gashes that would match up to the broken bottle. I replaced the tube and rode on. I found that the tire was not riding smooth. Where the tire meets the rim below the two gashes is bubbled up. It looks like the tire is going to bust the tire off the rim. The tire actually loses contact with the side of the rim. The tire has a large hump and I am not sure why. I checked the tube and it is fine. Could the gash be causing this??

Is there any shop locally where I can have my tires repaired? Seems I am pushing the bike more than riding. 2 flat tires in a row and it is too hot to push the silly thing home again!!! Help!

Susanne,
You probably have a thorn or some type of debris stuck in the tire causing the flats. What type of tubes are you using? Are they the ones that air up like a car tire or the metal ones? There are tubes with a compound called slime in them that will seal punctures. I would recommened them to anyone that isn't interested so much in how much something weighs. They weigh about 100 grams more than standard tubes.
What you can do or let one of us do is remove the tube on the tire you keep having flats and then run your hand on the inside of the tire and feel for anything that may puncture a tube. You would then have to remove it before putting another tube in. Another possible problem is that your rim strip needs to be replaced. It is either rubber or a cloth type material.

David,
The tubes are the kind like a regular tire that you air up. I use Bikes and Moore in Hoptown and called them today since they did the repair on Friday. They basically said the same thing. Probably, that I need a different type tube but that they might have missed something in the tire that is giving me the flats. Can I have all of this done in town or do I have to get the bike back to Hopkinsville?
Thanks!!
Susanne

we can get you running again. Your tube will probably need to be patched but we can do it. You can send me a private message and let me know when you want to get it fixed.
There is going to be a meeting on Tues at the Morton's Gap truckstop for the PAC Challenge. If you want, we can get you fixed before the 6pm ride. I would need to be there about 5:30 so we could get you going again.
You are welcome to attend the meeting since you will be working a SAG stop with Airin.

David,
I would have been there tonight to fix the tire AND ride but I HAVE to be at the funeral home from 5 to 7. If any other time would work for you, let me know. I can always get back to Hoptown sometime to have them repair the tire again. I may need the heavy duty tubes?? Thanks for the offer to get me back on the road. Much appreciated!
Susanne

Wed would be fine as well. Slime tubes would work or you can go to Wal-Mart (I believe) and buy the slime you just put in the tube. I'm covered up the rest of the day today.
No use in going all the way to Hopkinsville again to get a tube fixed.
