PAC had 4 participants in the Whitesville Lakewood Valley Triathlon this weekend. Race was held on private property in a town just SE of Owensboro. Beautiful place and the weather cooperated as well.
I was the wuss and participated in a relay with some friends. EJ Quijano was the swimmer, I had the bike, and Wes Ipock finished it off with the run.
EJ put in a good swim with some lightning quick guys. For a half mile EJ's swim time was 13:13 and we were third out of the water. 13 minutes and we were third out of the water!! THATS CRAZY!! The two in front of us were out in 10:48 and 10:52.
Our first transition was intresting as neither I or EJ could find the strap on the timing chip. When we finally found it and i strapped it on i grabed the Quintana Roo and headed off. We made the transition in 1:42, that time included EJ running up a huge hill from the lake to the transition area. The course was a whole lot hillier than i remembered it to be from two years past. with the exception of miles 6-9 it was up and down the entire time with one major climb that really hurt. I started off pretty solid and found a rhythm catching alot of riders and closing in on the two relay teams who were ahead of us. Then the crowd started to thin out a bit as we turned into a slight headwind and i caught a few more riders working my way into what i would call the elite category. From that point on (miles 9-15) myself and two other guys yo-yo'd back and forth all the way to the end of the bike leg. When it was said and done 15 miles had taken me 41:39, with an avg speed of 22.2 mph. I thought i could have done a little faster but overall i was pretty satisfied with my ride.
I coasted into the transition area, Wes unstrapped the timing chip and he took off for the 5k. That transition only took 29 secs.
Wes had a good run going until about the 2 mile mark where he blew out a shoe!!! Being the beast that he is, he takes his shoes off, never breaking stride, and carries them to the finish. Yeah, he ran the last mile on concrete barefooted. CRAZY! His split time was 18:50.
These times gave us a total of 1:15:52. That was only good enough for 3rd in our division. We were out of second by 1:23 and out of first by 4:13. The 1:15:52 time was good enough for the 4th best overall time of the day though, and was only 3 minutes off of the course record going into today. the record was of course broken by the 1st place relay team that had a awsome time of 1:10:39.
Wendy Watts also participated. I talked to her and she said she felt good in the water and bike but just hadnt been running enough. Her total time was 2:00:29. We were rooting for her to break the 2hr mark but it just wasnt to be.
Jan Richey was there as well. She took her time in the water, and then got down to buisness on the bike and in the run, passing her training partner Wendy at the turnaround point in the bike route. She finished with a impressive 1:54:23.
Last but not least, Koletta Jordan. I didnt see her, but she said she saw me. So ive decided she is a stalker. No. Not really. just kidding ;D . Koletta finished with a time of 2:08:54 , which is very respectable for a first time.
It was the perfect day for it and i think everyone had a good time. As far as i know everyone who started finished and there was only one bike wreck. It was pretty nasty, I witnessed it. happened at about 35 mph coming down a hill and the guy left some of his chin, face, and left side on the pavement. OUCH! But hes a warrior, he still finished. Also should mention that Moto GP World Champion Nikki Hayden was present and finished in the top 15 overall.
